More to know: Anam Cara is a Gaelic term that translates literally as "Soul Friend." An Anam Cara is trained in the ancient art/tradition of spiritual companionship to those on a sacred journey. And we are ALL on a sacred journey. But because Western society has confused religion (which is an external, human-created structure) with spirituality (which is an internal, organically-present process), many of us have lost the ability to discern the holiness in our own lives. We attend religious services that satisfy our social or cultural needs but that fail to move us spiritually, or we attempt to address our spiritual longings on a haphazard basis by occasionally reading self-help books or taking a oga class, or, most tragically, we stop attending to our spiritual life at all. As a result, no matter how successful or well-connected we are, we often feel alienated and disconnected from ourselves and from any greater sense of belonging.
I am a religiously unaffiliated Anam Cara who has been formally trained in the tradition. Through monthly, hour-long sessions with individuals, and through daylong group workshops and retreats, I have helped dozens of women develop their inner spiritual resources and reclaim the sacred narratives of their lives.
